¡Ay, caramba! Shook Ones II piano bassline sample finally revealed – this time the proper one.

Science dropped by ilMago aka Magic Johnson. Mar-21-2011

Let’s cut a long story short: one of our most visited post is bullshit! And to be honest… I’m happy with that!

Herbie Hancock is one of my favourite artists, Shook ones II is one of my favourite songs… isn’t this a great find?

Big up to Bronco from The Breaks Forum for finding it (apparently) and to Hawkeye from Soulstrut for breaking it down.

It’s official: that Thackeray Meets Faculty thing was a hoax. Well, not properly a hoax, since the chord and the type of sound are definitively on point if you ask me.

Mobb Deep – Shook Ones Pt II sample Herbie Hancock – Jessica

You can find a download link to all the songs involved in the drama following the links I posted.

Update: recently complex mag published an interview with Mobb Deep about the whole album. Here’s the Shook Ones part.

And here’s a few excerpts:

havoc: “So I just popped the sample up and I almost even erased it because I didn’t even really like it too much. [Laughs.] [...] But then my friends were like, ‘Nah, this shit is fucking crazy.’ So I kept it. Thank God because we probably wouldn’t be here right now if I had erased that. “

havoc: “I used to go to record conventions to go buy records and breakbeats. The drums that actually came from this record was called Vinyl Dogs. Vinyl Dogs were actually from the ‘90s and they used to have all these drum breaks. They were these two white dudes that loved hip-hop who would go breakbeat searching and put just a whole bunch of drum breaks on a record for the hip-hop producers to use. I got that and used that for the ‘Shook Ones’ drums.”

havoc: “Given that ‘Shooks Ones Pt. II” is a classic record, it just brought the curiosity out like,’What fucking sample is that?’ [Laughs.] And I’m not telling anybody what sample it was because I forgot what samples I used. [Laughs.] But that is definitely the sample because I remembered when they brought it out. [Laughs.] But that’s a secret between you and me. It’s good and it’s bad because I was reveling in the mystery of the sample, but if people wanted to know so bad then that just shows how much love people have for the track.”

havoc: “And I chopped it up and shifted the tempo a lot, so I put them on the keyboard. I made it faster, then made it slower. People were like, ‘What the fuck is that? What record does that come from?’”

Well, that’s all, if you want the full Fat Albert Joint in FLAC or 320, you can get it at the extraordinaire Flabbergasted Vibes blog:
