XIII Torino International Jazz Festival

Science dropped by Martini & Jopparelli. Jul-29-2007

Friday night I went to a fantastic Jazz concert. Really really nice!

The concert was part of the Torino International Jazz Festival which is one of the most important Jazz review in Italy. The festival is located in an outstanding park right in the heart of Turin. Behind the stage there is the Royal Palace where the Italian Royal Family used to live (thanks god we kicked them out :) ), on the opposite side you have the Mole Antonelliana, the symbol of Turin. I mean, a nice scenario indeed!

I saw two concerts: Tribute to modern Jazz Quartet and Jazz Tribe. The first group was ok, don’t get me wrong, but Jazz Tribe was superior.

Jazz Tribe are:

Ray Mantillia: He was nominated for a 2007 Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Award in the category of percussionist of the Year! He did not win but believe me he is terrific! The most impressive in the group in my opinion.

Bobby Watson: A saxophonist, composer, producer and educator.

Jack Walrath: Trumpet

Ronnie Mathews: Pianist.

Curtis Lundy: Bass player, musician, composer, producer, choir director, arranger. The single “Jesus Walk” of Kanye West sampled from an arrangement of the song “Walk with Me” arranged by Curtis Lundy.

Bill Elder: Drummer

I had a lot fun sipping Becks and listening to this great musicians. And the summertime is not over yet……

LISTEN TO Mason Land Express – Jeremy Steig & Ray Mantillia (Congas and Timbales)

LISTEN TO Djinn Djinn – Jeremy Steig & Ray Mantillia (Congas and Timbales)

LISTEN TO Dorian – Roy Haynes with Booker Ervin & Ronnie Mathews (Piano)

LISTEN TO Lift Every Voice and Sing – Art Blakey & Bobby Watson (Alto Saxophone)

Stay tuned as we will do a review of The Porretta Soul Festival. Don’t miss it as we have an exclusive Booker T & the MG’s video.

Wish I was sipping Becks in Italy. Concerts must be great!

  7. You need to know more about Jazz History to dismiss MJQ so casually in your review. To assist you to become more educated and refine your knowledge and appreciation spectrum, read Jazz entries in wikipedia, and this to get you started about Modern Jazz Quartet and their impact on the music you favor today: http://arted.osu.edu/160/05_ModernJazz.php

  8. Marty says:

I did not dismiss Moder Jazz Quarter, it was just a tribute to them. No one from MJQ was in Turin that night. The group was about 4 italian musicians playng MJQ music. Anyhow i just said that the first group was ok, but Jazz Tribe was superior! That’s it.

Anyway i will take your advice to refine my knowledge!
