This man is a dope beat-maker as well as a refined dj.
He arranged beats for giants such as De La Soul, not bad as curriculum.
He granted an interview to “Superfly magazine“, unfortunately it is written in italian but don’t get pissed off…i’m gonna translate a couple of extracts from his interview, David Nerattini was the journalist.
Ok this is definetely occult advertising, but nowadays who doesn’t it?!
Plus we got Mr. Martini and Mr. Jopparelli who edit a column on it.
DN: “on ‘Here to there’ there are no declared samples, how do you take it out with clearance?”
SPINNA: “i cut samples off in order to make them different from original, i preserve their sound but hardly original phrase, so their are basically unrecognizable. I made records quite undergrond, so lawyer’s radars cannot wiretap them. Moreover i sample very rare records, you got to be a serious beat digger to get them”
DN: “Which samplers do you use to uptake?”
SPINNA: “Mostly MPC3000, my beats come often from it. It has less features than 2000XL, but it plays better to me. I still have my SP1200, i use it when i want to get that typical dirty sound. SP is an old machine with very few sampling seconds, but no one other got its sound, those good rolling heavy and rough sounds come only from there. Basically i think my record will be mostly comprehensible by those who listen Hip Hop in years and they are looking for somethng new, those who want to expand their musical taste.”
DN: “who mostly influenced you as a producer?”
SPINNA: “Talking about Hip Hop, definitely those who made beats between ’88 and ’93, people like Pete Rock, De La Soul, Large Professor, Prince Paul, A Tribe Call Quest, also Public Enemy. I like a lot of old stuff from Chicago, people like Larry Heard, Mr. Lee, Marshall Jefferson or brothers Burrell. Over and above pre-beat music as soul, funk and jazz…on these topics i could shot names for a while”.
DN: “And who do you like among contemporary artists?”
SPINNA: “Lately i like Madlib productions very much. I have followed him since firt LootPack works, but stuff is doing now with Yesterday’s New Quintet or Quasimoto is incredible. I like people who experiment.”
When i listened to “Strange Thing and Games” i was delighted, totally stuck while old successes were flowing on…have a look at tracklisting below, nothing but outstanding.
I felt in love at once with the rock soul anthem “Reasons”, Minnie Riperton reminded me Micheal Jackson when singing in the Jackson 5. More than him he was able to get higher, something like a sweet nightingale.
Lady Riperton has Deniece Williams another Dynomite Singer, Michael Sembello a Solid Session Musician who was a part of Stevie Wonder’s Band&Who later went on to do Songs for Films&a ton of other Session work. Then there is Stevie who Musically clicked really strongly with Minnie&Her range. The title cut alone is pure Magic. The arrangements, harmonys&Musicianship are all Strong to me. It’s the kind of Album where things all fell into place really well.
This would be an excellent addition to your soul collection because it again displays her complete artistry as a singer. Her singing is effortless & beautiful without any hint of melisma that’s so prevalent in today’s r&b music.
Follow my tip, listen to Minnie album then move over to “Strange Games”…i think that’s the better way to spend a couple of hours of good music.
