A ride on the Stalag Riddim

When I first heard Mad Lion It was in the 1995. At that time Reggae was not my thing. Ok I was into Bob Marley, as everybody knows Marley. To tell you the truth, in that instance, I have recorded the Mad Lion’s tape only because he was related to KRS-ONE. In fact KRS ONE is the producer of the song Take it easy. Basically this one was my first, and in that period the only, approach to Reggae music. Time has changed quickly and it’s funny to think about my fundamentalism of those days. Take it easy is a solid song, with an excellent bass line. The production is on point as all the BDP productions (straight out from D&D studio) back in the ‘90s.Check his official site.

The refrain of Take it easy is by Yami Bolo. The song is When a mans’ in love. This song is simply lovely, god damn! I can’t get enough of this tune, rude and sweet at the same time. I definitely like his voice, deep and dramatic. The Yami Bolo’s track is build on the famous Stalag riddim.

The Stalag Riddim was first released in 1973 by Winston Riley. After this date this riddim has been used very often by many artists. Check the whole list. One of the best song on this riddim is without a doubt Sister Nancy Bam Bam. Maybe not the best but the most famous for sure.

I suggest you another “trip” as here at musicselections we do things seriously :) Sister Nancy has been sampled by Main Source in the track I just hanging out from the masterpiece album Breaking Atoms (1991) and the Stalag Riddim was used by Too $hort in Blowjob Betty from the album Get in where you fit in (1993). Too $hort was one of the first MC I have really loved.

But it’s not over, as when I start digging, I don’t stop till I get to the centre of the earth as Jules Verne.

Yami Bolo When a mean’s in love has been sampled by King Kooba in California Suite (Vagabond Mix), you can catch the Oh Boy, Boy, Boy on the track.. Once again the smooth Yami’s voice gives a fantastic touch.

This track is included in the outstanding Late Night Tales. I love Nightmare on Wax.

A different version is also included in Mark Farina “Mushroom Jazz 3”. I saw Mark Farina live in Cork two years ago, very eclectic DJ, he can play deep house as long as downtempo.

And finally Sister Nancy Bam Bam was sampled in the 2001 by Groove Armada in the song Fogma, from the album Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub).

This is another brilliant example of how music is an amusement ride!
