Dana Dane and The Good Old Fame

Posted in Breaks, Hip Hop on August 29, 2007 by Marty AKA Marty McFly

dane-rick2.jpg

Let’s start with a simple fact: Slick Rick is one of my favourite. Dana Dane is his “twin”. I mean, they got the same style, the same flow, the same accent (English wanna be :) ), they went to the same high school and they used to hang out together. Yeah, you got it, they also have been part of the same crew, the Kangol Crew. I like Slick, I like Dana. Simple like that!

Slick Rick about the Kangol period: I was in a crew called the Kangol Crew. We weren’t a real crew. We wore blazers and Kangols that matched. Like green, purple, yellow. Little stuff to make ourselves known. Only me and Dana (Dana Dane) tried to do it.

I really miss positive rappers like Dana Dane. Have a look at this video, he doesn’t act like a gangsta, he doesn’t act like a clown, he doesn’t act like a millionaire…he is just a musician telling how he works. Like he says, just regular. Without taking himself too seriously. This is the way it should be because I am a grown up person and I can’t stand clown rappers anymore.

Two tracks (from the album Dana Dane with fame 1987) and a couple of breaks:

A classic break (one day I will do a post on this tune):

The Honey Drippers – Impeach the president / Dana Dane – Dana Dane with fame

and….

Brick – Dazz / Dana Dane – Cinderfella Dana Dane

Back in Town Bringing African Sound – 21 Essential Tunes

Posted in Funky Beats on August 25, 2007 by Marty AKA Marty McFly

Yeah, I’m back in town like Rufus Thomas and I am ready for a new long season here at Musicselections. We are going to deliver you more music, more knowledge, more fun than ever. You don’t have to do anything, just sit back and relax, we are working for you. The only thing we ask you is to leave a comment once in a while, It’s always highly appreciate and don’t cost you a thing :) .

Ismael Seck & friends:

I have bought some nice compilations in Senegal so today how can I not push some African sound. It’s a terrible cloudy day here in Turin and I already miss the sun, plus I am back to work, what can be worst than that?

As I told you before I don’t consider myself an expert of African music. Afrobeat, Highlife, Mbalax are just kind of new words for me but I like it. They got rhythm, they got soul, they got funk, they basically have the three main ingredients to prepare a main course. The sound is just apparently primitive, is rather stylized and essential. I like the rough way they play, the sound is often dirty, the voice is repetitive and patchy. Like Joppa said in his Reggae post: “Let these vibes surround you, and tell me, after listening these ones: who needs modern music?”

Dj Premier/Mr.Thing: The Kings Of Hip Hop

Posted in Breaks, Hip Hop with tags , , , on August 12, 2007 by joppa AKA Arthur Jopparelli

Holiday time here in Italy, just a quick post for one of my favourite cds.

I bought this CD at the Rototom Sunsplash festival in 2005…i guess i was one of the few people to come out of a reggae festival with a hip hop CD! Despite being overloaded with reggae music 24 hours a day, i picked up this cd immediately from the stand, especially after seeing the playlist!

kings-of-hip-hop.jpg

Dj Premier here gives us a classic break mix with his typical mixtape style: he plays the first bars of each tune back and forth several times, then he lets the track flow and he occasionaly doubles-up the best parts. Pure fire. Back inthe 90’s, putting my hand on a mixtape like this was a only a dream. Stuff like this was almost impossible to find in Italy back then. Nice i found it now at least, late is better than never.

premier-tape.jpg

Mr. Thing is a DMC winner and former member of the Scratch Perverts. I never heard of him before this CD, since i am not into turntablism a lot. But, after seeing the track list on the booklet i thought: this dj is my idol! He starts with Smif N Wessun, then he mixes the Black Moon “Got Cha Opin” original with the remix (the highlight of the whole mix), then he puts some De La and Pete Rock, and finally he switches back to the late 80’s….what a terrific selection! And best of all, he doesn’t scratch too much (i was a litte afraid of this because when turntablists scratch too much they don’t let you hear the track as it is supposed to flow)! So, big up Mr. Thing for keeping his fingers quiet this time.

I thought, since maybe most of you already have this cd, why not rippin it in hi-quality 320 kbps LAME!! The definitive rip!

Minnie Riperton ‘Perfect Angel’ / Dj Spinna ‘Strange Games & Things Mixed By Dj Spinna’

Posted in Breaks, Hip Hop, Mixtapes, Soul Music on August 4, 2007 by Ozzino

spinna.jpg

This man is a dope beat-maker as well as a refined dj.
He arranged beats for giants such as De La Soul, not bad as curriculum.
He granted an interview to “Superfly magazine“, unfortunately it is written in italian but don’t get pissed off…i’m gonna translate a couple of extracts from his interview, David Nerattini was the journalist.
Ok this is definetely occult advertising, but nowadays who doesn’t it?!
Plus we got Mr. Martini and Mr. Jopparelli who edit a column on it.

strange_games_remix.jpg

DN: “on ‘Here to there’ there are no declared samples, how do you take it out with clearance?”
SPINNA: “i cut samples off in order to make them different from original, i preserve their sound but hardly original phrase, so their are basically unrecognizable. I made records quite undergrond, so lawyer’s radars cannot wiretap them. Moreover i sample very rare records, you got to be a serious beat digger to get them”
DN: “Which samplers do you use to uptake?”
SPINNA: “Mostly MPC3000, my beats come often from it. It has less features than 2000XL, but it plays better to me. I still have my SP1200, i use it when i want to get that typical dirty sound. SP is an old machine with very few sampling seconds, but no one other got its sound, those good rolling heavy and rough sounds come only from there. Basically i think my record will be mostly comprehensible by those who listen Hip Hop in years and they are looking for somethng new, those who want to expand their musical taste.”
DN: “who mostly influenced you as a producer?”

SPINNA: “Talking about Hip Hop, definitely those who made beats between ‘88 and ‘93, people like Pete Rock, De La Soul, Large Professor, Prince Paul, A Tribe Call Quest, also Public Enemy. I like a lot of old stuff from Chicago, people like Larry Heard, Mr. Lee, Marshall Jefferson or brothers Burrell. Over and above pre-beat music as soul, funk and jazz…on these topics i could shot names for a while”.
DN: “And who do you like among contemporary artists?”
SPINNA: “Lately i like Madlib productions very much. I have followed him since firt LootPack works, but stuff is doing now with Yesterday’s New Quintet or Quasimoto is incredible. I like people who experiment.”

When i listened to “Strange Thing and Games” i was delighted, totally stuck while old successes were flowing on…have a look at tracklisting below, nothing but outstanding.

perfect-angel.jpg

I felt in love at once with the rock soul anthem “Reasons”, Minnie Riperton reminded me Micheal Jackson when singing in the Jackson 5. More than him he was able to get higher, something like a sweet nightingale.
Lady Riperton has Deniece Williams another Dynomite Singer, Michael Sembello a Solid Session Musician who was a part of Stevie Wonder’s Band&Who later went on to do Songs for Films&a ton of other Session work. Then there is Stevie who Musically clicked really strongly with Minnie&Her range. The title cut alone is pure Magic. The arrangements, harmonys&Musicianship are all Strong to me. It’s the kind of Album where things all fell into place really well.

p16070b3u43.jpg

This would be an excellent addition to your soul collection because it again displays her complete artistry as a singer. Her singing is effortless & beautiful without any hint of melisma that’s so prevalent in today’s r&b music.
Follow my tip, listen to Minnie album then move over to “Strange Games”…i think that’s the better way to spend a couple of hours of good music.
